    Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to belong to Scottish Hills Recreational Club to participate on swim team?

Yes, swim team is only open to club members. Membership information can be found at Scottish Hills Website

Do swimmers need to have swimming experience?

No swimming experience is required to register for the swim team, but being comfortable in the water is helpful. In order to remain on the team, swimmers (for safety reasons) must be able to swim one the of strokes, unaided, their competition distance by Time Trials (the first Tuesday of June). Please note that this does not mean swimmers need to be proficient in the strokes. They just need to be able to swim safely in the water for that distance.

Competition distances (one lane length is 25 yards):

    • 15 yards for swimmers ages 6 & under
    • 25 yards for swimmers ages 7-10
    • 50 yards for swimmers ages 11 and up

A swimmer’s age group is defined by his or her age on June 1 of the current swim season. Swimmers do not change age groups during the swim season.

If your swimmer is unable to swim the distance by Tuesday Time Trials (or unable to attend Tuesday's event), they have a second opportunity at Make-up Time Trials the following Saturday morning. If they are still unable to swim their distance, we will refund your swim team registration fee and recommend private lessons or the Sea Pups Program if your swimmer is 6 or younger. Read more about our Sea Pup Program here.

How much does it cost to Register for Swim team?

What do my swim team dues cover?

Swim team dues cover practices, meets, regular team activities, and the team t-shirt. Team suits can be purchased for an additional cost. They are purchased through Kiefer Aquatics in Cary. You can go to the store and tell them you swim for Scottish Hills and they will know which suit is ours! Team suits aren’t required but most swimmers do purchase them.

What other benefits are there to joining the team?

Our focus is building an environment of fun, friendship, and sportsmanship for everyone involved. We have lots of activities for swim team throughout the season, including Monday Night Pasta Pump-Up Dinners for swimmers and their families, Tuesday morning Crafts & Snack, Fun Friday Game Nights with Coaches, Sea Lion Olympics, and more. Swim team is a great way for kids and families to build friendships that will last long after the summer ends!

    Volunteering

Parent volunteers are needed to help run the meets. Each family is asked to volunteer for 4 shifts during the season – shifts are in advance of the meet, the first half, the second half, or clean-up at the end. Even if you are new to the team, there are easy ways you can help. The coordinators will meet with new parents to explain everything, and the Time Trial is like a mock meet where you can learn any of the positions. Volunteer Job Descriptions
